OpenCut
by OpenCut-app
OpenCut is a free, open-source video editor intended to run in the browser, on the desktop and on mobile, as an alternative to CapCut. The repository is currently being rewritten from scratch, so the code here is a development build rather than a finished editor.

CapCut Pro starts at £16.67 a month (billed annually, The page shows £199.99 a year for Pro, which is about £16.67 a month. Monthly billing is £21.99. The page says displayed prices are for reference only, and final pricing and taxes appear after sign-in, so I couldn't confirm whether VAT is included. Teams is cheaper per seat (£120 a year, about £10 a month) but needs at least 2 seats. I read the page through a summarising tool and a separate search showed USD prices, so check the figures at checkout.; source, checked 27 Oct 2026)
Our suggestion based on what it does, not a feature-by-feature comparison.
Make money with it
A freelancer could offer short-form video editing for local businesses using a free editor, which keeps software costs at zero.
An idea, not financial advice. Check the licence before charging for anything built on it.
Ways a business could use it
- Edit social media and marketing videos without paying for a subscription editor
- Plan future batch rendering and automation through the promised headless mode and MCP server
Can you use it commercially?
Free to use, change and sell, including in paid products. Keep the copyright notice.
Not legal advice. Read the project's licence file before building a product on it.
Getting it running
You install the proto toolchain manager, run "proto use", then start each app with moon commands such as "moon run web:dev".
Follow the official instructions in the project README.
Things to check
- Being rewritten from the ground up, so the current repository is not ready for everyday use
- The usable version is in a separate repository (opencut-classic)
- Not accepting outside contributions at present
- Planned features such as the MCP server and headless mode do not exist yet
