What you can do with it
- Save web articles, PDFs and email newsletters to a personal reading library
- Highlight, annotate, label and search saved content, with sync to Logseq or Obsidian
- Subscribe to RSS feeds and read them alongside saved articles
Make money with it
Someone could run a curated reading list or research newsletter, using Omnivore to collect and highlight sources before writing it up.
An idea, not financial advice. Check the licence before charging for anything built on it.
Ways a business could use it
- Collect and annotate industry articles and newsletters in one searchable place for market research, instead of paying for a reading subscription
- Keep a shared reference library of source material for client work, hosted on your own server so you control the data
Can you use it commercially?
Free to use. Anything you distribute that includes it must be open-sourced under the same licence. Running it as an online service also counts, so a hosted version must offer its source.
Not legal advice. Read the project's licence file before building a product on it.
Getting it running
You run it on your own server using Docker Compose, following the self-hosting guide in the repository, which also needs Postgres and a Chromium-based page fetcher.
Follow the official instructions in the project README.
Things to check
- The hosted cloud service was shut down in November 2024, so you must host it yourself
- Licensed under AGPL-3.0, which has obligations if you offer it as a service to others
- Self-hosting is fairly involved and relies on community upkeep
- Text to speech is iOS only
