openrig
by mvschwarz
OpenRig is a command-line tool that lets you define a team of AI coding agents (such as Claude Code and Codex) in YAML and run them together as one persistent system. It is for people who want several agents with set roles and shared context to work on a codebase, rather than juggling separate terminal sessions.

What you can do with it
- Define a team of coding agents with roles in YAML and start it with one command
- Mix Claude Code and Codex agents in the same team and manage them together
- Give a lead agent an outcome and let it coordinate specialist agents on a repository
Make money with it
A freelance developer could use agent teams to deliver client software projects faster, or offer set-up of custom agent workflows as a paid service.
An idea, not financial advice. Check the licence before charging for anything built on it.
Ways a business could use it
- Run several AI agents in parallel on a software project to get features and fixes done with fewer paid developer hours
- Set up repeatable agent teams for client coding work so a freelancer can take on more projects
Can you use it commercially?
Free to use, change and sell, including in paid products. Keep the copyright notice.
Not legal advice. Read the project's licence file before building a product on it.
Getting it running
Install globally with npm (npm install -g @openrig/cli) or the supplied install script, then run rig setup; it needs Node.js 22 or 24, tmux, and macOS, Linux or WSL2.
Follow the official instructions in the project README.
Things to check
- Needs a signed-in Claude Code or Codex account, which may involve paid subscriptions or usage costs
- Changes files on your machine, including ~/.tmux.conf, ~/.claude.json and ~/.codex/config.toml, so back them up first
- Its default kernel agent gets broad permissions, such as full access with no approval prompts on Codex
- Native Windows is not supported (WSL2 only) and automated tests do not yet run on WSL2
