Self-hosted apps

tldr-radio

by mat-nolen

TLDR Radio is a self-hosted web app that turns the daily TLDR tech newsletters into chaptered podcast-style audio episodes. It fetches the public archive pages, builds a script from templates and reads it aloud with a local text-to-speech model, with no language model rewriting the text.

Worth a lookEstablished, with a few things to check (listed below).

What you can do with it

  • Pick a date and generate audio episodes of the TLDR newsletters, with one chapter per story
  • Schedule overnight builds so the day's episodes are ready to play in the morning
  • Download an episode as a single tagged mp3 to use in a podcast or audiobook app

Ways a business could use it

  • Keep up with industry tech news by ear while travelling or working, saving reading time
  • Adapt the pipeline as a starting point for turning other public, structured newsletters into audio for a team

Can you use it commercially?

Free to use, change and sell, including in paid products. Keep the copyright notice.

Not legal advice. Read the project's licence file before building a product on it.

Getting it running

Clone the repository and run "make up" or "docker compose up -d --build", then open localhost:7777; the first run downloads about 5 GB.

Follow the official instructions in the project README.

Things to check

  • Depends on the structure of the public TLDR archive pages, so a layout change could break parsing
  • Large first download of about 5 GB
  • Content belongs to TLDR, so check their terms before sharing the audio publicly

Who's talking about it
