dbmcp
by haymon-ai
A small single-file MCP server that lets an AI assistant look at and query MySQL, MariaDB, PostgreSQL and SQLite databases. It is for letting tools such as Claude Desktop or Cursor explore database structure and run queries, with read-only mode on by default.

What you can do with it
- Let an AI assistant list tables, views and other schema details in your database
- Ask questions in plain English that the assistant turns into read-only SQL queries
- Reach a private database through an SSH bastion, or share the server over HTTP with a bearer token
Make money with it
A freelancer could offer AI-assisted reporting or database clean-up services for small businesses, using this to explore client databases quickly.
An idea, not financial advice. Check the licence before charging for anything built on it.
Ways a business could use it
- Let staff or a freelancer ask an AI assistant questions about sales or customer data without writing SQL by hand
- Speed up database debugging and schema documentation for client projects, saving developer hours
Can you use it commercially?
Free to use, change and sell, including in paid products. Keep the copyright notice.
Not legal advice. Read the project's licence file before building a product on it.
Add it to Claude Code
claude mcp add dbmcp -- docker run -i --rm ghcr.io/haymon-ai/dbmcp:0.9.1
From the official MCP Registry (ai.haymon/dbmcp). Only connect MCP servers you trust: they can act on your behalf.
Getting it running
Install the single binary with a one-line curl or PowerShell script (Docker and Cargo also work), then add it to your MCP client's .mcp.json with database settings.
Follow the official instructions in the project README.
Things to check
- Write tools can change or drop data if read-only mode is switched off
- Exposing the HTTP server beyond localhost without a strong token would expose your database
- Needs an AI assistant or client that may require its own paid subscription
- The description mentions built-in PII redaction, but the README provided does not cover it, so check the docs
