text-to-cad
by earthtojake
A plugin that lets AI coding agents such as Claude Code, Codex and Cursor design 3D models by writing Python scripts, then export them as STEP, GLB, STL or 3MF files. It also runs manufacturing checks, produces engineering drawings and includes a viewer for inspecting the results.

What you can do with it
- Describe a part in plain words and have your agent generate a 3D model as STEP or STL for 3D printing
- Run design-for-manufacturing checks and create engineering drawings from a model
- View and rotate models in the built-in CAD viewer, then ask the agent to change them
Make money with it
Offer a custom 3D-printed parts or prototyping service, using the agent to turn customer descriptions into printable models quickly.
An idea, not financial advice. Check the licence before charging for anything built on it.
Ways a business could use it
- Produce custom brackets, enclosures and prototype parts quickly for 3D printing or CNC without paying for CAD seats
- Generate manufacturing-ready files and drawings to send to fabrication services for quotes
Can you use it commercially?
Free to use, change and sell, including in paid products. Keep the copyright notice.
Not legal advice. Read the project's licence file before building a product on it.
Getting it running
Install uv, then add the plugin through your agent's plugin commands (for example two claude plugin commands for Claude Code) or ask your agent to install it from the GitHub URL.
Follow the official instructions in the project README.
Things to check
- Needs an AI agent subscription or API access to be useful
- Sends usage stats and crash reports by default (can be turned off)
- AI-generated designs should be checked by a person before manufacture
