Marlowe is a free Windows desktop app that checks a seller, recruiter, landlord or website against more than 3,400 public sources. It gives a plain-words verdict (Looks fine, Be careful or Red flags) and saves a copy of the page behind each finding.

Hidden gemIt turns Sherlock-style username searches into a desktop app that gives a plain-words verdict, a timeline and hashed, archived receipts for each finding, so a non-technical person can vet a seller, recruiter or landlord. It is free, runs locally, is signed and MIT-licensed, and sets clear ethical limits. Best for marketplace buyers, renters and job seekers vetting a stranger before paying.

What you can do with it

  • Check a seller, recruiter or landlord by nickname, email, phone number or link before paying or signing
  • Look up a website's domain age, certificates and archive history to spot a new or fake shop
  • Export a PDF report with saved evidence to send to a marketplace, bank or the police

Ways a business could use it

  • Vet new suppliers, online buyers or freelance clients before sending money or goods, to reduce the risk of fraud losses
  • Monitor your own company name and domains for new exposure or impersonation without paying for a monitoring service

Can you use it commercially?

Free to use, change and sell, including in paid products. Keep the copyright notice.

Getting it running

Download the zip from the latest release, unpack the whole folder and run Main.exe on Windows 10 or 11, with no admin rights needed.

Follow the official instructions in the project README.

Things to check

  • Windows only in the released download; other systems need building from source with Rust and Tauri
  • Not suitable for screening tenants or job applicants (FCRA and data protection rules apply)
  • Results come from public signals and can be wrong, so findings need checking by hand
  • Optional local AI verdicts need Ollama; breach checks by email need your own Have I Been Pwned key
  • Could be misused for snooping on people, though the README sets limits and asks for a reason for each check

Checked 01 Nov 2026. Summary drafted by AI from the project's README.
