AI agents and automation

maka

by apache

Apache Maka is a desktop, terminal and command-line workspace for running AI agents that complete tasks using a model of your choice. It records every message, tool call and permission decision in a local log, so runs can be reviewed and recovered after a crash.

Worth a lookEstablished, with a few things to check (listed below).

What you can do with it

  • Run an AI agent in a desktop app or terminal to summarise or work on a code repository
  • Connect your own cloud, local or gateway model and keep sessions stored on your machine
  • Review the full event log of an agent run, and compare agent setups using the built-in evaluation tools

Make money with it

A freelance developer could use it to speed up client coding work and keep a complete record of what the agent changed.

An idea, not financial advice. Check the licence before charging for anything built on it.

Ways a business could use it

  • Have an agent handle repetitive coding and repository review tasks while keeping a full audit trail of what it did
  • Test different models and agent setups on your own tasks to pick the cheapest one that does the job well

Can you use it commercially?

Free to use, change and sell, including in paid products. Keep the copyright notice.

Not legal advice. Read the project's licence file before building a product on it.

Getting it running

You build it from source with Node.js 22.19 or newer and npm (npm ci, then npm run dev:full), or install the CLI from the public npm package.

Follow the official instructions in the project README.

Things to check

  • Incubating Apache project, so not yet fully endorsed by the ASF
  • No bundled model account, so you need your own model access, which may mean paid API keys
  • Currently needs a source build for the desktop app
  • Graph runs need a clean Git worktree

Who's talking about it

iFixAi ifixai-ai
Worth a look

iFixAi is a command-line tool that tests an AI agent by placing it in a simulation of your business and sending it realistic requests, including ones that push it beyond its role. A separate AI judge grades each reply, so you can see whether the agent behaves as intended.
