ai-memory
by akitaonrails
ai-memory is a shared long-term memory for AI coding assistants such as Claude Code, Codex, Cursor and Gemini CLI. It records what happens in each session and passes a handoff to the next tool, machine or teammate, so nobody has to re-explain the project.
- Stars
- 13.9k
- Licence
- MIT
- Runs on
- A small server
- Setup
- Moderate
- Language
- Rust
- Age
- 158 days
What you can do with it
- Stop work in Claude Code and carry on in Codex with a handoff of what failed and what is still open
- Share project knowledge between teammates' coding agents through one server
- Keep agent memory as plain markdown files in a git-backed wiki that you can search or edit by hand
Make money with it
A freelance developer could use it to work faster across client codebases and take on more projects, or offer to set up shared agent memory for small teams.
An idea, not financial advice. Check the licence before charging for anything built on it.
Ways a business could use it
- A freelancer switching between AI coding tools avoids paying for repeated context and re-explaining client projects
- A small dev team shares what its agents learn about a codebase, which cuts onboarding and rework time
Can you use it commercially?
Free to use, change and sell, including in paid products. Keep the copyright notice.
Not legal advice. Read the project's licence file before building a product on it.
Getting it running
It ships as a single Rust binary that you run as a server and register with each agent through MCP and lifecycle hooks, with details in the project docs.
Follow the official instructions in the project README.
Things to check
- The default path needs no LLM, but the optional consolidation and 'dream' features need an LLM API key
- Native Windows support is experimental
- Memory compaction and deduplication are off by default and rewrite content once enabled
